Gentlemanly Conduct
In these contemporary times the behaviour of lacrosse players is often discussed by club officers
as being unsupportive and disruptive to the organisation of club games and events, and it often
bemoaned that attitudes and loyalty were much better in the old days. Well it can now be confirmed
irrevocably that time between the past and present has not changed things, neither in the case of
the officers complaints, or with the lack of enthusiasm and appreciation shown by some players,
because according to Stockport's records the same problems were experienced in the 'good old days'.
The following text is an faithful reproduction of a pro-forma
letter produced and issued to the Stockport Club members some time
during the 1930's for them to make a declaration of support to the club.
To the HON. Secretary,
Stockport Lacrosse Club,
Cale Green, Stockport
Dear Sir,
I Wish to continue as a playing member of the STOCKPORT LACROSSE
CLUB and promise to faithfully carry out the following principles:-
1. Not to cry off with out sufficient reason (NB.- My own
convenience shall not constitute a sufficient reason).
2. When absolutely imperative for me to cry off to give the
Secretary the longest possible notice.
3. Not to get the hump and sulk if I an not on the team I think I
ought to be, but to cheerfully play on the team for which I am
picked.
4. If selected as a member of the committee, to do my duty
impartially without any thought of personal friendships
5. On the field to obey implicitly the requests of my Captain,
however distasteful.
