The
History of Stockport Lacrosse Club - Founded 1876
This section of the website has been reproduced
from the commemortive booklet printed in 1995.
The Beginning
In the lacrosse season of 1875 to 76
Stockport Lacrosse club was founded. Since that time to the
year 1996, 120 seasons of the Clubs existence will have taken
place, making Stockport...
"the Oldest Club in England" ...and
perhaps the World.
For the celebration of this achievement,
an at the time of the staging of the World Cup in Manchester
England, the current Stockport Lacrosse Club Committee has supported
the production of this Commemorative Booklet for the enjoyment
interest of lacrosse enthusiasts everywhere.
The whole of the Club Membership extends
a warm welcome to all the international visitors to England
for the 1994 World Cup.
Paraphrasing the words of L. B. Johnson, Club
President 1925-26...
'In the season of 1995/6 when the Stockport
Lacrosse Club attains its 120 year of continuous existence,
the Committee, in the accompanying pages, give, as far as its
been able, an brief insight into the history and activities
of the Club since its formation in the season of 1875-6. It
is a record of which the Club and all associated with it are
naturally proud. The Club, like all sports organisations, has
has its periods of great successes, and seasons when the ambitions
of the players and supporters have not been realised, but throughout
the one hundred and twenty years the players, and many of them
among the most brilliant in the the lacrosse world, have played
the game for the shear love of it, And it is mainly of this
truly sportimg spirit which has characterised Lacrosse players
during this long period, that the game has continued to retain
its popularity in Stockport.'
The above statement has been taken from the
Jubilee Souvenir booklet preface produced in 1925 for the 50th
anniversary and reproduced here changing only the periods and
dates to have it apply to the 120th anniversary. The sentiment
L. B. Johnson conveyed in 1925 is still equally relevant for
the Club and Lacrosse players of today.
